I was in a quandary after completing my Spartan Sprint in Washougal, WA. I knew that I was planning to join the Spartan Trifecta club in 2016 (run the Sprint, Super and Beast in one calendar year) but also knew that seemed like an eternity away!
So I started getting hungry for that next Obstacle Course Race (OCR) and started reviewing everything like Tough Mudder in Colorado – but with that just being this upcoming weekend and a little longer than I was ready for (10-12 miles long), I knew it probably wouldn’t work (until next year at least :-)).
And then I found the Savage Race in Houston on November 7th – and pretty much fell in love with the course. Between the 7-mile course (which is a perfect stretch distance after my 4.75 mile Spartan Sprint) and the amazing 25 obstacles (including their signature Colossus – an amazingly muddy half-pipe wall – reminds me of a muddy version of the Warped Wall on American Ninja – you run up with an extreme slip-n-slide on the other side) among other strength and endurance testing obstacles, I knew I was in.
My training has already been bumping up – including supersets of burpees, bear crawls, pullups, and grip strength training (see at top) – not to mention a huge host of other strength training.
I will be ready. I plan to have a blast. And I have a feeling this will not quench, but increase my hunger for OCR.
Am I a touch crazy? Maybe. But at the end of the day I will have pushed myself, stretched myself, and become stronger and faster than I am today.
