Three random facts combine together for one amazing ride:
- I’m a bit crazy and becoming crazier by the week.
- I love my wife like nothing else!
- We are Portland-bound for an anniversary trip.
So what ties all three of these statements together?
In three weeks we are planning to celebrate our anniversary by taking a trip to Portland and the beautiful Oregon Coast. The last time we were there was our honeymoon many, many years ago.
My wife was looking through things to do in Portland and suddenly stared at me point blank and stated, “You should do this. You would have a blast!” I hemmed and hawed a bit – not because of the difficulty of the race (though that should have been up there as well) but because I didn’t want to take a day out of our trip for this amazing experience on our anniversary trip.
But with her insisting on how much fun it would be for not only myself but her to watch and cheer me on, it didn’t take me long to succumb to her persuasiveness.
Yes – I am on my way to becoming a Spartan – all on August 8th at the PAC West Sprint in Washougal, WA!
The promised mud (should be a ton more than we ever saw during the DirtyBird from just a couple of weeks ago), the jumping over the fire, the barbed wire, the walls – and don’t forget the BURPEES (30 for every failed obstacle) – all of it is preparing to make for an amazing Saturday and one exhausting event.
I look forward to crossing the finish line – giving it my all and knowing that I have achieved something that I would have never dreamed of doing even a few months ago.
But what’s cool is this is becoming my norm. This is changing me. And I like it. A buddy of mine from work said, “Funny – when I go on vacation I like to take it easy.” Not this guy. Not anymore.
Check out the race from 2013 – the guys that made this video made this look like the biggest party you could imagine. And party I shall – all the way through the blood, the sweat and the tears.
And then check out another video from the 2014 Spartan Sprint in Washougal:
And for those goals that I mentioned above? If this goes well – like I know it will – I’m hoping to become a member of the Spartan TRIFECTA Tribe in 2016. That’s right – SPRINT, SUPER and BEAST in one year. Its from setting these big goals that keeps driving me forward.
I love the quote from my latest edition of Runner’s World that sums up why I love setting such high goals:
We set big goals not to achieve them, but to set ourselves on a road trip toward them. That’s where the good living is. (by Lauren Fleshman)
I’ve set my goals.
I’ve been working like nothing else to achieve them.
I’m truly enjoying the good living.
I will be a SPARTAN!
